Precious Time
The older one gets, the more one realises that time doing what you like doing is quite precious because statistically it takes up a greater and greater time one has left to do it. This coming Sunday will be the start of my 80th year, so my thought today is why not use our time more effectively? Indeed that thought should be with us all no matter what age we are.
I recall a quote I read many years ago that suggested that “instead of working hard, try working smart?” That has to be sensible advice doesn’t it? For instance, why spend hours trying to learn your dots by simply repeating the errors you have made in all previous sings-through, instead of taking a few moments to identify where your errors are and attacking those? If you are not capable of identifying for yourself where your errors are, then be smart and take up some other hobby, because this one is most certainly not for you.
If you can pass the above test and of course the vast majority, if not all of you will, then try thinking of ways you can remove the ‘fag’ from your learning session by being much smarter.
I was talking with Jock the other day on this very subject and I said to him “whilst you are fishing, why not have your head phone on– (he only has one working ear)– so you can be learning your part”? He said he couldn’t do that because he had to concentrate on his fishing.
Well, I am sure that it is true, but it is also true that most of us, including Jock, use the disc players in our cars to help us lean our parts whilst driving. Now you are not going to tell me you don’t need to concentrate on your driving are you? QED!
If time is precious to you, then there is even more reason for you to use it as effectively as you can by being smart.
Any further thoughts?
