What’s the Lyric About?
I was once told that the most important two things in life (once you get over the fact that love, belongingness, and having a roof over your families head have been satisfied) are words and music.
So, if words are so important, why should that be?
Well, words are words aren’t they? We are all familiar with them so what can be special about them? Well, the first surprise could be that no two words have exactly the same meaning in every context to which it can be fitted. But every word, taken in the context in which they are written, has a specific meaning. That is the important point, I.e their specific meaning.
We are all very well aware that most words have more than one and sometime multiple meanings. But the author of a lyric has only one meaning to each of his or her words, so our role as users of these words, is to ensure that we understand their meaning, and project to our audiences, the meaning that the author intended.
This makes getting inside the lyric to become very important if you are attempting to convey a convincing true meaning of the lyric to you audience.
So, the message here is, don’t just mouth the words, think about their meaning before hand and do your best to convey that meaning to your audience.
